Protect Your Home From Hurricane Damage
Six tips to protect your Florida home from hurricanes this season
While summers in Florida mean an increase in time spent poolside and savoring some ice-cold beers, it also marks the beginning of hurricane season (officially starting June 1st). Lasting till the end of November, hurricane season can put quite a damper on everyone’s summer plans. With the proper preparation, however, you can enjoy the sunshine and have the peace of mind that your home will be properly protected in the case of a natural disaster. Here’s how:
1. Cover Your Windows
One of the most important things you should do is prevent damage to your home caused by windborne debris. Keep thick plywood or strong metal shutters ready for any window or door made of glass accessible from the exterior of your home.
2. Secure Outdoor Objects. Hurricane winds can reach speeds of over 100 mph, so it’s essential to establish a plan or list of items to bring in before a disaster strikes. Things like outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans, and anything else not tied down can be picked up by the wind and flung towards your home.

3. Prep your Plants. The same goes for the trees and shrubs on your property. Keep them well-trimmed so they are more wind resistant in case of an emergency.
4. Reinforce Garage Doors. If wind enters a garage, it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage. Look into garage door bracing kits and acquire the necessary tools you’ll need to install them.
5. Save Water. Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water. Additionally, plan to have approximately one gallon of water per person per day available to meet your drinking and cooking needs for a two-week period.
