Free Resource: DIY Gutter Inspection Checklist

Gutters play a crucial role in protecting everything on your home from its roof to its foundation. Making sure they are debris- and damage-free is key to maintaining the longevity of your gutters and preventing water damage.

Here are some things to look for when inspecting and maintaining your gutters.

#1: Clear out the debris

Remove leaves, dirt and other debris from gutters and downspouts. Flush the smaller, hard to reach debris out of the gutters and downspouts with your hose.

#2: Check the gutters for standing water

Pour water into the gutter and ensure that it flows freely through the gutters and downspouts. If the water accumulates in any area, the angle may need to be adjusted.

#3: Make sure there are no leaks, holes or cracks

As the hose is running in the gutter, walk alongside it to ensure that no water is coming out through a hole, crack or seam.

Small holes and cracks can be easily repaired. However, the gutter may need to be replaced if there is extensive damage.

#4: Ensure that all parts of the gutters are fastened and secure

Gently tug each section of the gutters to ensure that they are securely fastened to your home.

#5: Check for mold or mildew

Visually inspect your gutters for signs of mold or mildew.

Mildew can be removed by cleaning your gutters with a power washer and bleach water solution. If you find hazardous mold, contact a professional to advise you on how to remove it.

#6: Check for rust or stains

Visually inspect your gutters for rust or stains.

Both of these are an indicator of improper water drainage that can cause extensive damage to other parts of your home if not addressed.

#7: Visually inspect your gutters for sagging

If parts of the gutters are sagging, it is likely due to water and debris accumulation. This needs to be addressed immediately.

#8: Keep an eye out for erosion and flooding around your home

If you see signs of erosion around your home’s foundation where your downspouts are, place splash blocks underneath the downspout to redirect the water flow.

If your gutter is dumping water over the edge of your roof, there is most likely a blockage that needs to be removed.

#9: Check the downspouts

Make sure that the downspouts are not clogged and that each downspout has an elbow joint at the end of it.

#10: Check the ceiling inside of your home for water damage or stains

Make sure there are no water stains on the walls or ceiling inside your home.

If a gutter is clogged, the water can splash onto the siding of your home or inside of the soffit and fascia and cause it to rot.

If you find water damage or stains inside your home, contact a professional to help you identify the source of the leak.
