Why You Should Keep Your Gutters Cleaned

Why You Should Keep Your Gutters Cleaned

It’s official! Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow on Groundhog Day this year. That means winter is ending early this year, and spring is right around the corner. Although the groundhog can’t accurately predict the seasons storms, it is never too early to prepare your home for the spring rain showers in the near future.

If your home is not already equipped with proper gutters it’s not too late. The importance of having properly working gutters is very important in ensuring the protection of your roof, lawn and surrounding foundation. Although many homes have an existing gutter system, they are not always properly maintained, leaving them clogged up and useless. Without proper gutter maintenance frequent rainfall can cause erosion of the foundation with heavy overflow, and damage to the roof and siding of the house with locked in moisture.

Gutters are often forgotten about since they are out of sight and not easily accessible. Trees and landscaping around the home shed leaves during the winter and can slowly build up in the gutters. It is suggested that homeowners have their gutters cleaned at least twice per year to ensure proper operation. Hiring a contractor can range from $100-250 depending on the size of the roof, or the homeowner can spend a few hours clearing the gutters themselves. We have provided some tips below on how to clean your home’s gutters and save money.

  1. Have the proper supplies on hand
    1. Extendable ladder that safely reaches the roof
    2. A tool to scoop the debris from the gutters
    3. Trash bag or bucket to unload the leaves
    4. Gloves, long sleeve shirt, dust mask and goggles
  2. Do not lean on the gutters with the ladder. This may cause damage to the framing or break the gutter from the roof
  3. Scoop out majority of debris in sections between downspouts
  4. Use a high pressure hose or leaf blower to clear out downspouts and areas near corners. Push the excess debris down the downspouts until they are fully cleared
  5. While cleaning the gutters, look for any leaks or damage to the system and call Moreno immediately to fix them before further damage is caused
