What are soffits and why does your home need it?

Learn about soffit’s protective and visually appealing features

Your home is equipped with many important features, some that you are very familiar with and greatly appreciate, and others that you may not fully understand how they function. You’re likely aware of the importance of your roof and gutters, but one feature that is often overlooked and equally significant are soffits.

Keep reading to learn what you need to know about soffits as a homeowner.

What are soffits?

Soffits are the boards that cover the gap between your home’s siding and the edge of the roof, playing a vital role in protecting your home from natural elements. It not only helps supply proper ventilation to your home, but it also protects your home’s windows, trim, and foundation.

How can I tell if I already have soffits?

You probably have noticed that your roof has sections where it overhangs, known as the eave or rafters. If you stand directly under the side of your home and look up, you should see the part of your roof that extends beyond the walls of your home.

If you have soffits, you will see a covering or board, sometimes with small vents, that sits between the outer edges of your roof and the adjacent wall of your home. If you don’t have soffits, you’ll notice your rafter beams exposed.

Why do I need soffits?

Soffits serve both a functional and aesthetic purpose for your home. While function is most important, it’s also essential for you to enjoy the look of your home and make improvements to the property value over time.

Soffits allow the air to circulate which will protect your home from multiple issues including moisture buildup, mold, mildew, and structural decay. They also direct rainwater away from your home’s foundation, keeping water from wearing it down over time. Additionally, they keep your attic temperature down which will ultimately lower your utility bill.

On the aesthetic side, soffits provide a completed and polished look to your home. Soffits come in different materials and colors and provide a cover so you and your guests aren’t forced to stare at the rafters of your roof’s overhang.

What is the best soffit material?

There are quite a few materials to choose from when installing soffit panels, but the most highly recommended materials are vinyl and aluminum.

A vinyl soffit panel comes in a variety of colors, so it’s easy to match your home’s exterior color. It is water-resistant, not prone to cracking or chipping, and good for insulating your home. The major downside to vinyl is that it can discolor over time due to high heat.

An aluminum soffit panel is an extremely malleable and durable material, so it will not rot, chip, or crack. It tends to be more fire-resistant and water-resistant than many other materials, but the principal downside to aluminum soffits is that if impacted, they may dent.
