Our top five tips for maintaining your artificial grass

Learn how to efficiently clean your artificial turf to extend its longevity and vibrancy

Artificial lawns have become extremely popular over the past decade. From apartment complexes to single-family homes, the appeal to this perfectly-kept-grass is due to its long-lasting healthy appearance and low maintenance. However, just like anything else, it’s still important to treat artificial grass with care.

Continue reading if you want to get the most out of your artificial grass by learning about best practices for basic upkeep.

#1: Determine the frequency of maintenance

Artificial grass is multi-purpose, and not everyone uses artificial grass in the same way.

Depending on how you use your artificial grass, take those factors into consideration when you are crafting your artificial grass maintenance plan. If you are constantly using your artificial grass and have high foot traffic, it’s important to frequently clean your grass.

For example, an athletic field may need more attention compared to the artificial grass in your home’s backyard. Most artificial grass owners can conduct regular cleaning once a week or biweekly on average.

#2: Remove dust, dirt, and leaves

For a quick and simple clean, you can begin by running a hose through your artificial grass to remove most of the accumulated dirt and dust.

Next, you can use a broom to remove any larger pieces of debris, such as leaves or twigs. When sweeping, make sure to sweep against the natural direction of the grass to keep the blades in an upright position.

For a more thorough clean, you can use a power brush or power broom. This is good for deep cleaning and helps to get rid of flat spots in order to transform your artificial grass back to its original form. This type of maintenance is usually done once a year.

#3: Use gentle equipment

When it comes to tree debris, no lawn is safe from leaves, sticks, or branches. To prevent damage to your artificial lawn, stay away from rakes as they could tear up the grass fibers and turf, which would result in you needing a reinstallation.

Instead, opt to use gentle equipment like a leaf blower, soft-bristled broom, or a hose. These options will prevent any damage to the artificial grass fibers.

#4: Remove stains and spills

If an accident occurs and you spill food or drink on your artificial grass, don’t worry! Simply blot the spill and rinse the area down with a garden hose.

Artificial grass is known to be pretty stain resistant, but if you find yourself in a situation with a stubborn stain, try using a non-abrasive cleaner, like vinegar, water, or a mild detergent. Place the cleaner on the stain then use a bristle brush to gently scrub the stain away.

#5: Clean up after pets

One of the most popular reasons people decide to install artificial grass is so your furry friends have a designated spot to relieve themselves. Although it’s a great benefit, allowing your pets to use your artificial grass will increase the amount of times you need to clean your grass to at least once a week.

To clean up after your pets, dispose of the waste, rinse the areas they’ve used with water, and spray the area down with a cleaner. After doing so, use a turf deodorizer to get rid of any remaining unpleasant scents.
