Four Surprising Fun Facts about Gutters

Explore these fascinating facts you may not have known about gutters

Let’s face it, without gutters our homes would be a mess—gutters are an essential element for all structures and we shouldn’t underestimate their capabilities.

Even if you know the basics about a standard gutter, there’s more about them that you may not know. Continue reading and learn these unique facts about gutters:

#1: They’re ancient!

Gutters have a long history that can be traced back to 1500 BC. They were first used to divert waste from civilization until the Greeks and Egyptians used gutters as a way to collect rainwater or prevent flooding. Today, gutters remain an essential part of a home drainage system, serving the same purpose that our ancient predecessors recognized thousands of years ago.

#2: Wood and Clay

Wood was one of the first materials used to create gutters. This was primarily due to how accessible it was. The downfall of wood became apparent as wood absorbs water quickly and yielded more damage than protection in the long run.

Burnt clay was another commonly used material used to create gutters. They withstood torrential downfall better than wood but still lacked long-lasting durability. Seamless gutters have become the preferred option today, due to their ability to reduce the possibility of leaks and efficiently directing rainwater away from homes.

#3: Gutters come in all shapes and sizes

Today, gutters come in a variety of materials. These materials include vinyl, aluminum, steel, zinc, and copper. Any of these options can make for a great gutter, but the most commonly used materials are vinyl or aluminum. At Moreno & Moreno, we recommend using seamless aluminum gutters for homeowners because they have fewer seams and joints in the gutters and downspouts.

#4: All cars used to have gutters

Beginning in the 1900s, cars used to have gutters to prevent rain from falling on the passengers while exiting their vehicles. Today, most cars don’t have gutters. Although, some larger vehicles, like vans and buses, are still equipped with gutters.
