The homeowner’s fall home maintenance checklist

Get your home ready for fall with these fall home maintenance tips

While residents in Florida don’t typically experience the same drastic weather changes as homeowners residing elsewhere, there are still some fall home maintenance steps that you should follow.

Here is our fall home maintenance checklist to help you prepare for the fall season.

Maintain your gutters

It’s always important to clean your gutters no matter the time of year. However, during fall season trees shed their leaves, making it easier for debris to build up quickly and get trapped in your gutters.

Cleaning your gutters regularly can help you avoid:

  • Roof leaks––when rainwater doesn’t drain properly, it sits on your roof and water may begin to seep into your ceiling causing leaks.
  • Water damage––as rainwater builds up in blocked gutters, it can spill over and get trapped in the siding of your home and lead to mold and rot, causing costly repairs.
  • Broken gutters––when gutters are clogged, the water starts to collect in the gutters, which can cause  them to bend and tear due to the weight.

Inspect your homes door and window seals

The seals around your doors and windows wear down over time. These gaps in the seals can allow colder air and rain to get into your house, leading to higher heating costs and water damage.

One easy way to check if you have any gaps: close your door or window on a piece of paper; if the paper slides or falls, there’s a gap. Luckily, this fall home maintenance task is a quick fix with some caulk or weather stripping.

Check your landscaping

Fall is an ideal time to check your trees’ limbs to see if they need to be trimmed––something that’s especially important as heavy rain and hurricane season comes to an end.

Overgrown tree limbs can scrape against your home’s roof and siding, potentially causing damage. Damaged and weakened tree branches can also break off and pose a serious property damage risk and even cause injury.

Prune your trees, bushes, and other plants to help your home look polished and stay safe.

Take preventive measures against pests

As the temperature drops, pests and critters may try to make their way into your home. Check for cracks or openings outside your home where they may sneak their way in—especially soffits, ventilation panels, and roof intersections.

These unwanted guests chew through your wires, siding, and insulation, and can  even pose a serious health risk to you and your family.

Homeowners can prevent these pests from making their way into their home by spraying the exterior with pest repellent, sealing openings, regular cleaning, and getting repairs completed as quickly as possible.

Inspect your home maintenance equipment

If you have a lawn mower or other landscaping equipment that may be sitting for a while, consider purchasing some fuel stabilizer. When gasoline sits for longer periods of time, it begins to degrade, harming your engine.

Fuel stabilizer will prevent this and extend the life of your equipment. As an alternative method, you could simply run your equipment dry by letting the engine run until there is no more fuel in the tank.

We hope these simple fall home maintenance tips have helped you prepare your home for fall!
