The Moreno & Moreno artificial grass installation process

What to expect before, during, and after your artificial grass installation

Artificial grass is a great way to enhance your outdoor space. Artificial grass stays green and looks healthy all year long with little to no maintenance. It’s also an eco-friendly alternative as it requires less water.

Artificial turf is a great long-term solution and it’s fairly easy to install when done by experienced professionals. However, when untrained and unqualified people try to install the grass it can cause a lot of serious problems like sprinklers not being removed and not rerouting utility lines. It’s important to hire a trustworthy and qualified company to install your artificial grass.

Moreno & Moreno is committed to high-quality home improvement services. We created this step-by-step guide to help you understand exactly what to expect with our artificial grass installation process. Continue reading to learn everything you’ll need to know.

Before

  • Book your free estimate

At Moreno & Moreno, all of our projects begin with a free estimate! Call us or fill out this contact form and we’ll contact you with a time to start the artificial grass installation process.

  • Sitewalk

During the visit, our team will walk through your property to look at where you want to install your artificial grass. It’s important to take into consideration the surroundings to avoid any complications or inconveniences that could occur during the installation.

  • Excavation

Next, we remove the current grass and any rocks, mulch or stones you have. We finish off by removing a few inches of topsoil as well. The depth of the excavation depends on what you have now and what your desired final level is, but usually most excavations are 3-6 inches.

  • Re-route the utility lines

Our team will now need to re-route your irrigation, electric, gas, and phone lines to outside the installation area. We can also cap any sprinkler heads or the main water pipe for the sprinklers if you no longer want them. If the turf gets too wet from rainwater not being properly drained, or from sprinklers, it will deteriorate the looks and lifespan of the artificial grass. This is a crucial step to take to avoid these serious problems in the future.

During

  • Prepare with fabrics

Next, we install our weed blocking fabric to create a better structure by preventing not only weeds from disturbing the turf, but also rodents, roots, and pests.

  • Sub-base installation

This is the most important step to ensure that your turf is durable, long-lasting, and performs well. The foundation where we install the artificial grass is the key to the structure of it all.

We fill back in the 3-6 inches from the excavation with an aggregate. This material needs to be compact and able to drain well.

  • Leveling and compacting

Our team makes sure to create a surface that’s as smooth as possible by spreading the aggregate we added in the last step. We shape the area and define the edges that the artificial turf will extend to.

Now we sprinkle water over the area to lock in the aggregate. Then, we go over the area a few times with a plate compactor to get the best compaction we can. Artificial grass mimics everything under it, so it’s very important to remove all debris and rocks where the grass will go.

  • Prepare the artificial grass

We allow the artificial grass to acclimate for at least a few hours by rolling it out on a smooth surface. This allows the sunlight to remove any creases or wrinkles it may have. We then cut the turf to match your design and measurements, but always leave a couple inches just in case.

  • Seaming and trimming the edges

Before we cut the artificial grass to the exact fit, we seam together the individual turf pieces by nailing down some spikes. This guarantees that your artificial grass will not move. Once the turf is completely flat, we trim the edges for an exact fit.

  • Secure the artificial grass and clean up

Our team now begins to secure the artificial grass to your yard. As we nail down the turf, we brush up any fibers to maximize the appearance and remove any loose fibers.

  • Infill and finishing

The final installation step is infill. Most installations get a silica sand infill, but if you would like odor control or cooling features, we have those options as well. We spread out the infill using a drop spreader in three rounds. Lastly, we use a hose to wash out any residue.

After

  • Receive your invoice

Our team will inspect the completed artificial grass installation, and once it’s approved we send you an invoice.

Your invoice can be used as your final receipt, and it also serves as proof of warranty for future use.

  • Make your payment

We take payments by check or card, whichever you prefer.

If you want to pay with a check, please send it to the address on your invoice. If you want to pay with a card, you can do so over the phone, but there is an additional 3% fee for processing any card payment. This additional 3% fee is applied to the total of your invoice.

You can always refer back to this guide as needed throughout the artificial grass installation process—we hope it helps answer your questions and reduce any possible confusion.
